The Wizard of Oz and Christianity

The movie The Wizard of Oz contains many references to Christianity.

The first reference is the Witch of the East, which symbolizes an angel. This witch is dressed in white clothing and is capable of flying. This witch also takes the appearance of beauty. In our culture, angels are also dressed in white, can also fly, and also appear beautiful.

The second reference to Christianity is the Wicked Witch of the West, which symbolizes Satan. In Christianity, Satan was once an angel. We see the reference to an angel in the Wicked Witch in that this witch is also capable of flight. There are two other things about this witch that links her to Satan. This witch dresses in black, which is the color people think of as being evil, and Satan is considered an evil being. The last reference to Satan is that the Wicked Witch attempts to subside into temptation. (She tries to get Dorothy’s ruby slippers. This is something I will discuss a little later.) We know that Satan is involved in tempting human beings by the story of Jesus being tempted in the New Testament.

The Wizard of Oz portrays God. The Oz, it is believed by the characters in the movie, is an all powerful being. Dorothy and her friends believe that he has the ability to grant them wishes, such as the Lion having courage and the Tin Man having a heart. This is something that we kind of expect or wish from God.

The last symbolic reference to Christianity is the ruby slipper. As I have already mentioned, the slipper represents temptation. In the movie, the Wicked Witch employs numerous tricks and what not to obtain the ruby slippers from Dorothy.

The movie The Wizard of Oz contains many references to Christianity. When these references are combined, especially that of Dorothy, the Wicked Witch, and the ruby slippers, they tell a moral story that is based on Christianity. That moral is that things turn out great for a person who does not slip into temptation. In the context of The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy never gave up her slippers to the temptation of the Wicked Witch. As a result, she was able to find herself back into Kansas.

Very observant of you. And insightful. Something I have never thought of myself. Of course, I am not one for getting the full meaning behind such works, always hated that in school. But nonetheless, good to know SOMEONE is thinking. But I would see the moral of the story to be not so much the temptation (although that IS what Christians associate with Satin) as the evil. Okay, so, maybe you are right....I'll shut up now.

Umbeliverble..it is a little obvious that this movie is totally Satanic. A Witch, "good" or bad, could never represent an angel..Satan is behind them all..and just "google" the words "Wizard of Oz" and "satanism", and you will check complete and serious studies about it..Oz comes from Osiris, an egyptian Demon..some say that the name Ozzy also comes from it..like "little osiris"..
Satan imitates Christianity, but with a self-indulgence appeal..thats why you cant see any sign or analogy to Jesus in the movie, because He breacks the self-indulgence idea by his sacrifice..think bout it..see yah!!!

Instead of seeing the lesson as "don't give into temptation", I saw The Wizard of Oz being much more anti-superstitious and anti-religion.
The wizard is God, who is shown to be a fraud. Dorthy and the other three only work to see the wizard for their own selfish reasons (to get home, for a brain, etc.). The fortune teller in the beginning is also a fraud. In the end, Dorthy discovers that the could have clicked her heels/prayed to get home; but she used her own inner power to get there, without assistance from wishing/praying or a wizard/God.

THIS IS THE GREATEST STUPIDITY I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME.
IT IS SO BAD I CAN HELP BUT CRITICISE IT.

1) The Witch Of The East Is Supposed To Be EVIL (thus she cannot be an angle)

2) All Witches Wear WHITE … Read The Book

3) Oz Has No Real Power, He Is A "HUMBUG" (aka hypocrisy/insincerity) And He Is A Former Ventriloquist.

By relating Oz to God you can only be saying that God is a con-artist…That is Blasphemy!!!
-The only unforgivable sin- -Repent Now or Burn Forever!

4) The Slippers are The Way Back To Kansas… How Is That Temptation?

If anything the Golden Cap is Temptation And The Slippers are Salvation

I agree with Nicole. I believe this movie is ANTI-Christian or anti-religious, if anything! God doesn't exist - it's up to you to make life what you want it.
